Local Attractions

Any city nicknamed the Tulip City is sure to be beautiful, and the coastal town of Holland, Michigan is no exception. The sandy shores of Lake Michigan Beach bring scores of visitors during the summer months. But the city's biggest claim to fame is its floral, midwestern beauty, which is front and center every year at the Tulip Time Festival.

Holland also has over 1,000 acres of public park space, 150 miles of bike paths, and a surprisingly bustling downtown. So as a Freedom Village resident, whether you're a lake life lover, or a flower aficionado, you'll have plenty of options. Here are a few more highlights:

  • Breweries — Michigan is a craft beer hub for the midwest, and Holland has tons of great brewers
  • Big Red Lighthouse — Holland's website says it's the most photographed lighthouse in Michigan
  • Windmill Island Gardens — breezy, beautiful gardens with windmill tours
  • The Felt Estate — picturesque look at historic Holland
  • Holland Farmers Market — 2 markets each week, with local food and wares

Did You Know?

Holland is home to the last windmill to leave The Netherlands. The DeZwaan, or “swan” in Dutch, was built in 1761 and was purchased in 1964 by the city of Holland to pay homage to the area’s rich Dutch culture. After its arrival, it took six months to reconstruct on what is now Windmill Island, which sits next to Freedom Village Holland.
